The Plus Addressing feature, also known as subaddressing, is already available to most Exchange Online users. This means that you can finally enable Plus Addressing as well.
For those who don’t know, subaddressing is a way to support dynamic, disposable recipient email addresses for mailboxes.
In simple terms, it’s an opportunity to create an indefinite number of custom email addresses by adding suffix text strings to their standard address with the help of a simple + delimiter.
If you’d like to take advantage of this feature too, there’s one downside to consider, as Microsoft itself reveals:
Since Exchange Online has always supported regular email addresses that already contain the plus sign, if you enable plus addressing, these email addresses might stop working.
How to enable Plus Addressing in Exchange Online organization?
Set-OrganizationConfig -AllowPlusAddressInRecipients $true
By default, this feature disabled in Exchange Online. If you’ve decided to correct that, note that you can’t enable plus addressing in the Exchange admin center.
You can only enable Plus Addressing through PowerShell. Refer to the above steps in that regard.
Assuming that your organization’s emails are already routed through Exchange Online to your on-premises servers, do note that mailboxes hosted there will be able to use plus addresses as well.
Moreover, after making this change, you’ll be able to easily filter emails that are sent to plus addresses. In that regard, apply the usual Inbox rules.
