Windows 10 is the most popular operating system among Steam gamers

April 2023 · 2 minute read

According to Steam’s latest data report, Windows 10 is by far the number one operating system among its gamers. The news comes on the heels of Microsoft’s 2% market share increase among gamers compared to April.

Thanks to these results, we can now better interpret the general Windows 10 market share growth confirmed by Netmarketshare. According to the latest data available on their website, Windows 10 gained a 2% market share compared to last month, which is actually the same percentage detected by Steam’s survey. In other words, the market share growth was mainly generated by gamers upgrading their OS to Windows 10.

The data for this survey is collected automatically via the Steam client using an optional and anonymous setting. The results come from those gamers who agreed to participate in the survey and leaves a margin for error.

Windows 10 began to lead slightly ahead Windows 7 among Steam users in April, while it completely overtook Windows 7 back in May. How Microsoft convinced users to upgrade is a very different story. Over the last few months, Microsoft resorted to various underhanded tactics such as offering users no option but to upgrade, and making the X button of the Windows 10 upgrade pop-up window behave like malware.

When it comes to the most popular OS, Microsoft is currently in a competition against itself, so to speak. Redmond’s desktop OS runs on most of the world’s computers and is top dog in the Steam community, with 95% of players running various Windows versions.

The good news regarding the adoption rate of Windows 10 keeps piling on: Recently, more than 300 million devices were confirmed to be running Windows 10 worldwide, Windows 10 is the most popular OS in the US, and analyst expect its growth rate to skyrocket after the Redstone Update.
