A good number of Second Life users have been reporting crashing issues with Windows 10 and for some of them, the program isn’t opening at all.

Second Life users wondered about the compatibility of the software in Windows 10, but now that they have seen that Second Life works in Windows 10, a number of crashes have begun appearing.

Some of them, though, still have some troubles with Second Life crashing in Windows 10, as it doesn’t open or just stops working at a certain point.

This is what one Second Life users that is using Windows 8.1 has shared with the community on the Second Life support forums:

I upgraded my operating system from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, and I could not open Second Life Viewer for incompatibility. Then I uninstalled it with the intention of installing it again, but Windows 8.1 did not allow it. You know what someone should do so that it can install without problems again? Thank you.

Many Second Life players encountered a bevy of bugs after installing the latest Windows 10 versions on their computers.

As a matter of fact, Second Life crashes more frequently on Windows 10 compared to Windows 8, 8.1. If the problems persists, maybe the workaround listed below will help you fix it.

What can I do if Second Life keeps crashing in Windows 10?

  • Run the BSOD troubleshooter
  • Check your drivers
  • Clean boot your computer
  • Additional solutions
  • 1. Run the BSOD troubleshooter

If Second Life crashes with a Blue Screen of Death error, you could also run Windows 10’s built-in BSOD troubleshooter.

Go to Settings, click on Update & Security, then go to Troubleshoot, select Blue Screen, and run the tool and then test the game again.

Expert Tip: Some PC issues are hard to tackle, especially when it comes to corrupted repositories or missing Windows files. If you are having troubles fixing an error, your system may be partially broken. We recommend installing Restoro, a tool that will scan your machine and identify what the fault is.

Some users suggested other solutions, but these didn’t manage to solve Second Life‘s system incompatibility. Another user says the following:

Windows is up to date, Drivers all up to date. Everything’s up to date. I’m brand new to SL, Signed up, seen premium said sure why not. Downloaded viewer, it crashes. Thought hmm. Maybe it was a fluke. Start back up it crashes over and over and over. Looked through the forums for solutions, Tried the whole %appdata% thing doesn’t work. About to go ask for a refund, and put SL on my ignored list of programs to never download. Unless anyone else has some ideas?

    2. Check your drivers

If your graphics card drivers are out of date, Second Life will keep crashing in Windows 10, so make sure that you’re running the latest graphics driver versions on your computer.

Go to your driver manufacturer’s website, and download the drivers from there. Restart your computer and then launch the game again.

Big-time gaming can be done without crashes, lags or freezes by keeping all drivers up to date and error-free. Manual checks are hard to perform, that’s why we recommend using an automate assistant that will scan for fresh driver versions daily. Here is how to use it:

  • Download and install DriverFix.
  • Launch the software.
  • Wait for the newly installed app to detect all your PC’s faulty drivers.
  • You will be presented with a list of all the drivers that have issues, and you can choose the ones that you want to fix.
  • Wait for the driver download and fixing process to complete.
  • Restart your PC for the changes to take effect.
  • DriverFix

    DriverFix

Do not let a bad driver interfere with your games and installed software. Use DriverFix today and run them without a single issue.

Disclaimer: this program needs to be upgraded from the free version in order to perform some specific actions.

    3. Clean boot your computer

  • Type msconfig in Windows Search.
  • Select System Configuration, and go to the Services tab.
  • Choose Hide all Microsoft services, and click Disable all.
  • Right-click on the taskbar, and select Task Manager.
  • Select the programs that you want to disable on startup, and click Ok.
  • Reboot your computer, then launch Second Life.
  • If you’re running too many apps and programs at the same time, this might impact the resources allocated to running Second Life.

Try performing a clean boot in order to launch Windows 10 with a limited number of drivers to direct as many computer resources as possible towards running the game (especially if you’re using an old machine).

    4. Additional solutions

If the game continues to crash, maybe the solutions available in the following troubleshooting guides will help you fix the problem for good:

Somebody suggested that a new test viewer has been available for download. Finally, if you have the patience, follow these steps suggested by another user on the Second Life support forums:

    1) Manually apply ALL the Required and Important patches for Windows 8 from Microsoft. A new Win 8 PC needs 4-5 iterations of this to get them all. The easiest way to do this is to:

    a) Enter Desktop Mode
    b) Launch Internet Explorer
    c) Right-click on the options area of the Browser and turn on Menu & Status Bar [and any other of the old standards you like]
    d) Tools / Windows Update.
    e) Select the CUSTOM button so you can monitor and select the downloaded options to install. Repeat until all are DL’d and installed. Don’t install the Bing Desktop. Also, don’t install any Windows Live components unless you have an email account with Microsoft.

    2) Identify the Video / Graphics system in your PC and get the Windows drivers direct from the Video System manufacturer.

P.S. I recommend these steps on all Windows 8 PCs and Laptops, specifically designed for Windows 8 with high-end Graphics Sub-Systems or Graphics Cards.

P.S.S. – On Upgraded PCs & Laptops – If your computer was not designed specifically for Windows 7 or Windows 8 these steps may still help. There are many Designed for Vista PCs that don’t upgrade well to Windows 8. If your PC was designed for Windows XP, Windows 8 is usually NOT a viable option, practically speaking.

Let us know if you have managed to solve your Second Life problems on Windows 10 by applying the above-mentioned methods.
