Microsoft has been teasing numerous innovative design ideas for the Windows 10 Start menu for a while now. The tech-giant doesn’t seem to want to get rid of the live tiles, but it’s at least giving the feature a facelift that’s in alignment with the Fluent Design concept.

Well, if you’ve been wondering when exactly Microsoft intended on delivering the new menu, you may wonder no more! Build 20161, which is now live in the Dev Channel, brings the feature.

The redesigned Windows 10 Start menu

Microsoft started rolling out new Windows 10 icons to insiders back in February, but these haven’t always looked great on the Start menu. Moreover, Fluent Design icons for Office applications and even Microsoft Edge may look out of place with the solid accent color behind the tiles.

That’s set to change with the redesigned Start menu for Windows 10 shipping to insiders.

We are freshening up the Start menu with a more streamlined design that removes the solid color backplates behind the logos in the apps list and applies a uniform, partially transparent background to the tiles.

So, in build 20161, the solid backplates are no more. Instead, the tiles now lie on a see-through backdrop that applies across the entire menu.

Microsoft adds that the new tiles are theme-aware, meaning that they blend in perfectly regardless of the accent color you apply to the menu or tiles. So, whether you go with a dark or light theme, the new Windows 10 icons will look fantastic on the redesigned Start menu.

You could also pick a splash of color for the new interface, but you’d have to first activate Windows dark theme.

Next, switch to Show accent color on the following surfaces for Start, taskbar, and action center under Settings > Personalization > Color.

You may then apply a vibrant accent color of your choice to the start UI.
