The PWA concept is in development, and new features might reach users this fall when Windows 10 Redstone 5 is scheduled for launch. The OS should be ready by September, just ahead of the public launch which is set for October. Of course, the release date is not set in stone when it comes to Microsoft.

Progressive Web Apps aka PWAs came with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update. Basically, they run on a Windows 10 device like a native app, but without having to be connected to the Internet. PWAs use Service Workers, and they can mimic a UWP app almost completely. They can also support features such as notifications and Live Tiles.

Microsoft pushes further the PWA concept

Microsoft tried to find a way to fix the lack of apps on its modern Windows platform, and the tech giant will continue its efforts with Redstone 5 which is scheduled for launch this fall. In the fall update, Microsoft plans to push further the PWA concept.

New display modes for PWAs

The company announced during Build 2018 that two new display modes for PWAs are currently in the works to enhance the experience with the apps.

The first display mode will be the full-screen, but it will eliminate on-screen controls, compared to a regular full-screen setting that expands a particular app to the entire screen.

The second display mode involves a minimal user interface setting that brings more navigation controls which include refresh, forward, and back. This setting highlights the fact that PWAs are web apps that are powered by a browser engine. Users would get a chance to pick their controls that they want to be able to see on the screen.

We have to wait until this fall to see what Windows 10 Redstone 5 brings new for the PWA concept and if the two news screen modes will make it in time for the release of the latest Windows 10 version.
