Microsoft has updated the Mail app for Windows 10 Insiders in the Fast ring. The updated Mail app is now version 16005, which includes some interesting changes. Early users of the latest Mail app have discovered a new Writing Area in it.

Microsoft originally introduced stylus pen support for Mail in June 2018 with the addition of a Draw tab to the app. Now the big M is taking things a step further with Writing Area. Writing Area is similar to taking notes on OneNote as it enables you to write out emails with a stylus pen within Mail. Then the app converts handwriting into standard text.

Mail’s Writing Area will certainly enhance the appeal of the Mail app for users with touch devices. It will be great for 2-in-1 laptop/tablet Surface Pro devices. However, users with any Windows 10 devices that support stylus pens will be able to utilize the Writing Area.

Microsoft is taking surface devices to a new level in 2020 with the Surface Neo and Surface Duo. Those are foldable mobile devices that Microsoft is set to release toward the end of 2020. Surface Neo is a foldable 2-in-1 tablet and laptop that will ship with a stylus pen. Thus, that is an upcoming device Mail’s new Writing Area will be ideal for.

Microsoft has also removed the Focused Inbox from Mail 16005. The Focused Inbox has disappeared from the updated Mail app. Consequently, all received emails are now included within a single tab. So, it seems that the big M might remove Focused Inbox from Mail.

The addition of the Writing Area, however, will certainly be a welcome change to Mail. With it, you can utilize your stylus pen for drafting emails in Mail. For now, Writing Area is restricted to Mail 16005, which is only available for some Windows 10 Insiders.
