Microsoft removes Wi-Fi Sense feature in Windows 10 due to low usage

June 2023 · 2 minute read

Microsoft announced it removed the Wi-Fi Sense feature in the latest build due to low usage. This feature allowed you to share your networks with your contacts or Facebook friends, without revealing your Wi-Fi network passwords. Also, thanks to this feature, Windows 10 automatically connected you to Wi-Fi networks around you in order to save your cellular data.

The Redmond giant launched the news on its blog and motivated its choice in the following manner:

We have removed the Wi-Fi Sense feature that allows you to share Wi-Fi networks with your contacts and to be automatically connected to networks shared by your contacts. The cost of updating the code to keep this feature working combined with low usage and low demand made this not worth further investment.

Microsoft added that if Wi-Fi Sense was enabled, it would continue to connect you to open Wi-Fi hotspots that it knew about through crowdsourcing. This is because the feature has already been removed from Insiders’ computers, while other users can still access it.

Wi-Fi Sense’s lifespan has not been too long, given the fact that it is available only on Windows 10 devices. Right from its launch with the original release of Windows 10, Wi-Fi Sense has been surrounded by doubt and criticism. Many users  were concerned about sending their passwords to Microsoft’s cloud, even if the company assured them it would be done in an encrypted manner.

Actually this could be the main reason why users did not embrace this feature. In a world where security threats are lurking everywhere, people tend to think twice before they accept a feature that involves confidential data. You can protect your computer when using Wi-Fi networks, but sometimes bad surprises do happen.

Speaking of features, maybe Wi-Fi Sense’s place in Windows 10 Mobile will be taken by the demanded double-tap to wake feature. This means that in the future, you could turn the screen on without pressing the power button.

Have you used the Wi-Fi Sense feature? Do you think it’s useful or you agree with Microsoft’s decision of removing it?
