  • RGB (red, green, and blue) and CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and key, which is otherwise black) are two alternative color models. They are two alternative models of representing colors. Some users might wonder what the distinction between them is and which of those color models printers utilize for printing.

CMYK is a subtractive color model that mixes cyan, magenta, yellow, and black to produce more colors. It does that by masking colors on white paper. Thus, it essentially subtracts lightness by mixing colors together.

The RGB model is the antithesis of CMYK as that forms more colors by adding them together. Thus, the RGB is an additive color model. Instead of mixing colors on plain white, the RGB model adds red, green, and blue together and mixes them on dark backgrounds.

Almost all printers utilize the CMYK color model for printed output. That’s why they print on plain white printing paper. Ink cartridges consist of the cyan, magenta, yellow, and black CMYK colors for printing.

Some companies have started to experiment with RGB printing. Merck KgaA has developed a new RGB printing technique. However, few companies have yet to embrace RGB printing as a viable alternative to CMYK. So, RGB printers aren’t available on Amazon just yet!

RGB is a device color model widely utilized by VDUs (Visual Display Units). Thus, monitors are based on the RGB model that mixes colors on dark backgrounds. RGB can display a wider variety of colors than CMYK.

Consequently, Adobe Photoshop and other software typically save images with an RGB color format. Printing RGB images with CMYK printers can generate some color disparity between the image and its printed output. Although this doesn’t generate a drastic difference, there can often be a slight color mismatch between the CMYK printed output and the RGB image.
