Are you by any chance using the iCloud app on Windows 10 or Windows 11? If so, it’s time for an update, and version 12.5 of the app is bringing a new password manager feature.

You will have the ability to access and manage passwords stored in your iCloud keychain, and sync it up with Edge and Google Chrome on Windows from a single experience.

As good as that sounds, It appears that in order to enjoy the password manager app in this new version of iCloud on Windows, you’ll need to have a PC that supports Windows Hello.

iCloud update brings new features to Windows app

This new experience is locked behind a Windows Hello screen, which, once you authenticate with your face or fingerprint, will reveal all your saved passwords.

What you will also have to do is install either the iCloud Passwords app extension for Microsoft Edge or the one for Google Chrome.

If you weren’t exact;y sure how all this works, both are linked in the main iCloud app via an Install Extension button.

Users that installed the iCloud app and managed to get the Password Manager on Windows 11, are getting an error about needing to sign in to iCloud for Windows, even though they are signed in.

Rene Ritchie, from Mobile Nations, has a nice view of what the app would look like. Its simply just a list of your passwords, with a search box and an edit, copy or delete button.

This new password manager app should be useful for people that have iPads and iPhones and would rather use iCloud keychain over Microsoft’s own Authenticator app.

You can also see stored passwords, and add in new ones from Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, and then have it stay synced across all your devices.

The iCloud app will automatically save and sync any website usernames and passwords but won’t do the same for applications and other sensitive personal data like your credit card number.

One more thing to know before this is all said and done is the fact that the app uses an encrypted database, and then the extension uses encrypted channels.
