Many users can't launch Skype because of this Javascript error

November 2022 · 2 minute read

Plenty of users recently started reporting that they are having problems installing and using Skype after the latest update.

They are complaining that every time they try running Skype, they are met with an error message.

I downloaded Skype-8.38.0.161 using Windows 7. I installed it. But the program did not open. Instead I got an error message ‘a JavaScript error occurred in the main process’.

While the majority of problems seem to apply to users that have Windows 7, there is also a chance for this error to occur on Windows 10 as well.

Helpful information was soon to appear on the Microsoft Answers forums, but they were usually generic solutions.

Skype’s not the only app affected by this Javascript error

However, it would seem that this particular error does affect other similar apps.

Because of this, there are a few general solutions you could try, as they do seem to work with the other affected programs.

One good example is how you could try deleting all the Skype-related content from the %AppData% and %LocalAppData% directories.

Another solution some users are suggesting is making sure your Quality Windows Audio Video Experience Service is set to startup automatically.

Additionally, you could try deactivating or completely uninstalling your antivirus program and see if that does the trick.

Lastly, completely uninstalling Skype and getting the latest version of Skype from the Official Website will surely solve your problem.

While no official information has been released on the matter, it is safe to say that this issue will be fixed as soon as possible, maybe even in the next update.
