Microsoft released an update package meant to reduce the protection gap in Windows Defender in newly installed Windows OS in enterprise environments.
According to the developer, the systems are not fully protected a few hours after upgrading to Windows 10, because the installation images may contain outdated anti-malware software binaries.
Thus, the new tool allows system admins to update the Windows Defender security package inside the Windows installation images (WIM or VHD supported).
As a result, instead of leaving the system under-protected until the first anti-malware update finishes, full protection can be ensured from the very beginning.
How to use the Defender updates package?
PS C:DefenderUpdateWinImage.ps1 - WorkingDirectory<path> -Action AddUpdate - ImagePath <path_to_Os_Image> -Package <path_to_package>
Note that in order to run the patch, you need a Windows 10 environment with PowerShell 5.1 or later versions, as well as Microsoft.Powershell.Security and DISM modules installed.
The package is compatible with Windows 10 (Enterprise, Pro, and Home editions), Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2016.
It takes up to 110 MB and updates the anti-malware client, anti-malware engine, and signature versions in the installation images. It includes the latest Defender updates and fixes.
The patch can be removed or rolled back using the following path: PS C:DefenderUpdateWinImage.ps1 - WorkingDirectory<path> -Action RemoveUpdate - ImagePath <path_to_Os_Image>
Having a backup of the initial image before applying the updates is advised.
