If you are, for some reason, unable to launch your Dell virtual console, be sure this guide is just what you need. The iDRAC remote console often stops from functioning properly after updating to Java.
The error message states Unable to launch the application and usually appears the second you try launching the iDRAC remote console. On the other hand, you could get a similar error message of Connection Failed in your Java console.
One way or another, these are related to the fact that browsers and applets like Java had major security increases in the past few years, while older DRACs/iDRACs have completely stopped receiving updates.
These are some quick workarounds to bypass the increased security features and launch your Dell virtual console again.
How can I fix the Dell virtual console launch error?
1. Lower the Java Security Level
When troubleshooting problems with your Dell virtual console unable to launch, it is best to start with the above steps.
Note that setting Java security level to Medium is normally not recommended. After finishing working with the Java application, don’t hesitate to change Java security back to High.
2. Add the iDRAC IP into the Exception Site List
If the above changes to Java Security Level don’t help or if you happen to launch your Dell virtual console regularly, you can also try adding the IP into the Java Exception List.
Java security is most likely continuing to block the connection because the manifest is not present or not properly formatted, so enter the address into the Java security exceptions list.
Just add the iDRAC URL to your current Java Security Level by clicking the Edit Site List. Then, add iDRAC URL https://192.168.1.1.
In case of experiencing the same error even after adding it, make sure that the IP was entered correctly. The address should match the URL exactly, including port numbers. When you start the console connection it should display the address you are connecting to.
3. Revert to an older Java version
As a workaround, you need to run an older browser and Java. Rolling back your Java to a later version might be a tad inconvenient, but do take into consideration that there are plenty of other applications that don’t work with the latest major releases of Java.
That should be enough to allow you to launch the Dell virtual console again. If you are still having problems, then it’s worth cycling the DRAC Plug-in Type between Java and Native or disabling Encrypted Video on the DRAC.
