How can I fix printing grayscale problems on HP Printers

  • Your HP printer allows you to print in both Greyscale (Black and White) and color options. Printing in black and white or color requires the users to change the preference in printer settings while printing a document. Sometimes, your printer may only print in greyscale and other times it will only print in color. This is a common issue with HP printers.

    I bought a new Dell computer.  Anything printed from this computer only prints in grayscale.  If I print the same document from another computer to the same printer it will print in color.  Have downloaded the drivers from HP, but problem continues.

    Of course, firstly check your color cartridges. If you have enough color in cartridges but the printer still prints only in grayscale, check the instructions below.

    The printer can only print in grayscale

    1. Uninstall and Reinstall the Printer and Drivers

  • Press Windows Key + R.
  • Type control and press OK.
  • Go to Programs > Programs and Features.

  • Find your printer in the list and select Uninstall.
  • 2. Remove from the Device Manager

  • Press Windows Key + R.
  • Type devmgmt.msc and press OK to open the Device Manager.

  • Expand Print Queues. Right-click on the problematic Printer and select Uninstall Device.
  • Close the Device Manager.
  • 3. Remove the Printer from the Control Panel

  • Press Windows Key + R.
  • Type control and press OK to open Control Panel.
  • In the Control Panel, search for Devices and Printer and open it.

  • Now select all the printers listed under Devices one by one, right click and select Remove Devices.
  • Make sure you do this for all the problematic printers.
  • After removing all the device reboot the system.
  • 4. Delete Temporary Files

  • Press Windows Key + R.
  • Type %temp% in the box and click OK.

  • It will open the temporary files folder. Select all the files in the Folder and select Delete.
  • Reboot the PC again.
  • In the next step, we will install the fresh printers drivers.

    5. Reinstall the Printer Driver

  • Go to the HP Printer Driver page.
  • Search for your printer model and download the latest printer drivers.
  • Run and install the printer drivers on your computer.
  • When the setup prompts you to connect the printer to the PC, plug the printer USB cable to your computer.
  • Try to print a document in color and check if the error is resolved. If necessary, reboot the system and try again.

  • Press Windows Key + R to open Run.
  • In the Run box, type control, and press OK to open the Control Panel.
  • Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
  • Select the Printer software and click Uninstall.
  • 2. Remove the Printer Driver

  • Press the Windows Key + R, type Control and press OK to open the Control Panel.
  • In the Control Panel, search for Device and Printers. 
  • Click on Printers and Devices.
  • Select any printer and click on Printer Server Properties.
  • Go to the Drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed.
  • Reboot the computer.
  • After the restart Press Windows Key + R.

  • In the temporary folder, select all the files and click on Delete.
  • 3. Reinstall Printer Drive

  • Go the HP printer driver page online.
  • Select your printer model and download appropriate drivers.
  • Run the installer and make sure you only connect the printer to PC when the setup wizard prompts you to.
