At Computex 2017, Qualcomm and Microsoft announced that ASUS, HP and Lenovo would be the first companies to launch Windows 10 ARM PCs featuring Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 CPU. These new devices are expected to launch by the end of 2017 and some of the first leaked benchmarks have now appeared on Geekbench.
Qualcomm and Microsoft have promised big things for the new Windows 10 ARM hardware. An official Qualcomm press release stated:
Each company is set to produce sleek, thin and fanless PCs running a Windows 10 experience with unparalleled LTE connectivity for an always connected, on the go experience. Coupled with the incredible 10nm leading node efficiency of the Snapdragon 835 Mobile PC Platform, these devices will feature beyond all-day battery life.
One Microsoft program manager stated that the new ARM devices would be a “game-changer” for Windows 10 laptops. The software giant has promised multi-day battery life amounting to 30 hours for the new laptops. Microsoft’s program manager said of the ARM laptop battery: “I may charge it every couple of days or so. It’s that kind of battery life.”
However, recently leaked Geekbench benchmarks for Windows 10 ARM devices include somewhat underwhelming single-core and multi-core scores. The highest single-core score for Qualcomm CLS systems is 1,202, and the highest multi-core score amounts to 4,263.
In comparison, some Android Snapdragon 835 devices have single-core and multi-core scores eclipsing 2,000 and 6,000.
The Geekbench site also includes some specifications for Qualcomm Windows 10 ARM laptops. The listed specifications include 1.90-2.21 Ghz CPU clock speeds. The listed RAM specification amounts to about 8GB. In addition, the laptops will have 32-bit Windows 10 Pro and S platforms.
The Geekbench benchmarks for Qualcomm CLS systems suggest that the Windows 10 ARM laptops might not live up to the hype. However, they are still early benchmarks for prototypes. The Windows 10 ARM laptops might have better benchmark figures when they first launch.
